Nintendo has announced that Tales of Phantasia for GBA will be released in Europe at the end of March.ToP, which first appeared on the SNES more than a decade ago, tells the story of two youngsters called Cress and Chester. Their village, Totus, is wiped out by a band of mysterious Dark Knights who are looking for two magical pendants which have the power to resurrect an evil sorceror. Wouldn't you know it, C&C just happen to have the pendants in their possession, and set out to avenge their village and do over the knights in the process. So, yes, it's an RPG, with a battle system that requires 'both strategy and reaction speed,' according to Nintendo. You are able to position and command a troop of up to three characters before taking direct control of Cress, pulling off attacks and casting spells while your AI opponents do the same.As the game progresses, you'll earn experience points which cause your character to level up, improve their abilities and learn new skills. Plus there are lots of weapons and special items to collect, unsurprisingly.ToP also features 'a unique cooking system' - as you travel around you can pick up rare and unusual ingredients, and combine them to create food or potions which come in very handy during battles.Environments include villages, caves, forests and fortresses, and the whole thing plays out on 'a huge multi-directional field map' which you guide your characters around.Tales of Phantasia is out on March 31st.
Zackbob6 rates this game: 5/5Here is Tales of Phantasia, a fun RPG for on the go! It features hours of the main story along with hours more in side quests and missions. The combat is real time, though does take place on a separate screen. It may seem slow or sluggish at first, however it is for good reason, as this allows you to keep track of everything and not be overwhelmed. You will get used to the timing and be performing intricate combos before you know it!The overworld is in mode7 graphics (basically, it's flat), but this doesn't deter from the game. You can easily tell what is what. It pays to explore the open world, with several hidden locations to find. The story is long and spans the present, the past, and the future! There is character progression and some backstory for each.
There is even a secret unlockable character not found in the SNES version! Mangybeard rates this game: 5/5Here, we have the game that kicked off the 'Tales' series, and a strong start it is! There's a bit of a learning curve, but the combat is admittedly pretty fun.
Download Tales of Phantasia ROM for SNES to play on your pc, mac, android or iOS mobile device. I looked around and didn't notice this has been posted anywhere, so thought I'd spread the word. Tales of Phantasia for the PSX is 100% translated!
There are several skills you can learn and use, some of which can be leveled up through use. You get a party of unique characters, each with different abilities and personalities. Notably, there's no real weak link in combat; everyone's pretty good! The party AI does feel a bit lacking, but you can change their settings to suit your needs. For example: Your mage is spamming fire attacks on fire-immune enemies? Turn off her fire spells! There's a large amount of content to be had, and it's a great time.
